Package overview

Nyama choma, mutura, Swahili coast food and Ethiopian injera across four or five Nairobi neighbourhoods. All the food is inside the price. Come hungry.

Nairobi eats better than its reputation, and almost none of it happens where visitors are usually taken. This is four or five stops across different neighbourhoods, eating what people here actually eat, with someone who can explain what is in front of you and order properly. You will meet nyama choma, goat or beef roasted slowly over charcoal and served on a wooden board with kachumbari and ugali, which is the closest thing Kenya has to a national ritual. Mutura, the grilled blood-and-offal sausage sold from street grills after dark, for those willing. Swahili food from the coast, biryani, pilau, mahamri and coconut bean stew, brought inland by Mombasa families. Ethiopian injera in the Kilimani quarter, eaten with your right hand from a shared platter. Chapati and githeri, the everyday food most Nairobi households actually cook. Depending on the day and your appetite we finish with Kenyan coffee at a roastery or dawa at a bar. On price, the food is included, all of it, and that is unusual for a food tour and the honest reason this package is priced where it is. USD 120 per person covers roughly USD 32 of eating plus the private vehicle, driver and guide. At four sharing it comes to USD 80 to USD 90 per person, USD 110 to USD 125 at two, and from USD 165 for one. Alcohol is not included. Tell us in advance about vegetarian, halal, allergies or a hard no on offal, and we will build the route around it rather than leaving you watching. Evening runs are better for street food, daytime runs are better for the markets.
