Karen Conservation Day

Karen is the green, quiet end of Nairobi, and this is the day that treats it as somewhere to spend time rather than a checklist. You start at the Giraffe Centre, where the endangered Rothschild's giraffes come to a raised platform to be hand-fed, then walk the short forest sanctuary trail behind it. From there it is Karen Blixen's farmhouse, the Danish coffee farm she wrote about in Out of Africa, kept much as she left it in 1931 with her books and her gramophone still in place. The Ngong Hills sit on the horizon behind it exactly as described in the opening line. Lunch is at one of the garden restaurants nearby, and the afternoon closes at Kazuri Beads, a workshop founded in 1975 that now employs around three hundred and forty women, most of them single mothers, hand-rolling and painting ceramic beads. The factory tour is free and the workshop floor is the interesting part, not the shop. On price, this is the best-value day in our range for one reason: there is no national park involved, so there is no USD 80 Kenya Wildlife Service fee. Entry costs here total roughly USD 29 per adult, being the Giraffe Centre at KES 1,500 and Karen Blixen Museum at USD 17 under the National Museums of Kenya tariff revised on 7 May 2026. Kazuri is free. Those fees and your lunch are inside the price. Per person it runs USD 115 to USD 125 at four sharing, USD 170 to USD 190 at two, and from USD 275 for a single traveller, with peak season at the top of each range. Worth knowing: Kazuri closes on Sundays, and the Blixen museum is at its best before the coach groups arrive around 11:00.
